China's dream for chip supremacy: Seeing through the lens of panel display-related IC patents

Abstract As China has made it a top priority to enrich and upgrade its chip capabilities across the value chain, some international observers predict that China's semiconductor industry will eventually, if not immediately, surpass foreign competitors. Others remain skeptical about presumed tech supremacy for plausible but largely speculative reasons. Is Chinese game-changer or paper tiger? indigenous technology attractive to, usable by, technology? One way look into these half-empty/half-full questions is comparatively analyze patents granted by US Patent Trademark Office. The target domain of this study integrated circuits (IC) technology, especially thin-film-transistor circuits, where recently registered sharp growth in patent publications. Using modified forward citation indices panel display-related IC patents, examines whether what extent quantitative been translated gravitational force pull industries within sphere influence. Estimation results zero-inflated negative binomial regression analysis show fewer expected index than non-Chinese patent. These findings indicate technological gap between advanced countries take longer close despite accelerated campaign supremacy. This concludes, with caveats, faces dual challenge achieving higher productivity greater self-reliance, while having survive escalating competition other countries.
